As the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, Indonesia enforces mandatory halal certification for a wide range of products entering its domestic market. According to Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance (JPH Law), all food, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, biological products, and other consumer goods must be halal-certified by the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH).
Foreign Halal Certificates Are Not Automatically Recognized
While your products may already be halal-certified by a recognized body in your home country, these certifications are not automatically valid in Indonesia. To legally distribute and sell your products in the Indonesian market, you must go through a registration process with BPJPH, either via:
- Mutual recognition of a foreign halal certificate (if your certifying body is acknowledged by BPJPH), or
- Re-certification through an Indonesian Halal Inspection Agency (LPH).

One essential requirement for halal certification in Indonesia is the appointment of a local Halal Supervisor (Penyelia Halal).
